Fuel Costs and How we Travel

We wish we were retired, but both Jeff and I are still working full time right now. Saving for retirement…but not there yet. We are fortunate that both our jobs allow us to work remotely and have a flexible schedule. We work 4 - 10’s; so Monday-Thursday and off on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Being that we work during the week we travel a lot slower than most. We move about every 1-2 weeks. This helps to make our fuel expenses less. We do longer hauls when we are crossing the country, but for the most part we move 100-200 miles every 1-2 weeks.

We have a diesel truck so we opted to get the Open Roads TSD card. It's a great fuel discount card. It's only for diesel, but it also allows you to use the truck stops which is great because they are usually so much easier to get into with the truck and trailer. It's not good at all truck stops, but there is an Open Roads app that you can search which ones near you take the card and what the prices/discounts are. They charge a small fee each time, but you still get decent savings.

It's similar to a fleet card, so you do have to connect it to your bank account and you also have to give them your social security number, but we have been using it for over 2+ years and only had positive experiences.

We have also recently added Upside to our fuel savings apps. It also has savings on groceries and restaurants. This one requires you to add the card your paying with, but no checking account information or social security number.
